1) Window Treatments
The most common element missed when decorating is the window treatments. I am here to tell you that even if you have blinds hanging in a room, It makes a huge difference pairing them with hanging curtains.
Curtains add beautiful texture and organic feel to a room. They create a sense of softness because of the fabric.
Visually, curtains can create a room to expand depending on how they are placed. You want to hang them higher and wider than the window itself to achieve this effect.

2) Missing Surfaces
Normally you will notice this more in a living room rather than any other space. So often people will put in a couch, coffee table and some chairs and forget the side tables.
Ideally, you want a section for each seat where your guests or you don't have to reach over to place an object. It makes for a practical environment.
Based on your couch placement, you can place side tables on either side of the couch or having a sofa table placed behind adds more variety on where to have things placed.

3) Variety of lighting
A lot of homes will have built-in lightings such as a single pendant light or a ceiling fan light.
Add in more options, whether it is a table lamp, floor lamp etc.
Lighting will help to create a mood in various rooms. Use your lighting to complement the time of day. When it's later in the afternoon, the sun is setting you to want to match that lighting as it helps you feel the sense of settling down and getting ready for your evening.
Lighting is also important for what tasks you will be doing. For example, if you are sitting in your chair ready to open a book think about what lighting you would use to read in.
A bonus tip would be to add dimmers. This helps create this cosy mood without you having all the lamps around the house.

4) Artwork
Many people have a hesitation to hang artwork. Adding bits slowly will make such a difference in defining what style and mood you are wanting to set in the space.
You can be bold and have a focal or signature piece on the wall or a simple gallery wall for interest and impact.
Knowing which wall to present your chosen artwork on depends on which wall is your focal point.
Having a fireplace in a room would be a clear indication of a focal wall.
Take note of sightlines. If you are looking from one room into another which wall are you seeing? If you see directly to a window then that will be your focal point from the room you are standing in.
Go higher than you think! this ensures your eyes move upwards towards the ceiling, adding height to a space.

5) Plants
Adding plants to a room adds a soft texture and organic feel to a space.
You could even add fresh flowers or cut branches from outside if you aren't confident in keeping house plants alive.
Shy away from the smaller plants as you want the plant to be a statement and an element to the room. Larger plants create a noticeable change in the environment when smaller plants can get lost in other design elements present in the room.

6) Know How To Scale Rugs
Smaller rugs are not useful in your living room or bedroom.
These spaces need bigger rugs
5"x7" - Good for an Entry Way or Bathroom
8"x10" - Bedroom or Living Room or Dining room that seats about 6 people.
9"x12" - Larger Living Rooms
8"x10" - Queen Size Bed
9"x12" / 8"x10" - King Size Bed
The key is to have your couch front feet on the rug and at least 6 inches of rug on either side of your couch.
Having a larger rug is a space expander, use this to your advantage.

7) Edited Colour Story
Having too many accent colour decor pieces can overwhelm a space. If there is too much happening in a room it makes it difficult for the eye to flow through the space.
You can still have a colourful and vibrant space by ensuring you are paying attention to the colours you are using.
Knowing your colour pallet helps you to understand what pieces will work well within the space.
You can still use a variety of shades within the colours you have chosen to create interest and not leave your room feeling too busy.
